What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? What Causes It?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway between the bones and ligaments at the base of your hand, and it houses the median nerve that controls your hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when that median nerve becomes compressed and damaged. The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • Strange sensations: Numbness, tingling or a “pins-and-needles” sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and part of the ring finger are the hallmarks of the condition.
  • Weakness: There might be a weakness in your hand, making it difficult to grasp or hold objects, especially small ones.
  • Pain or discomfort: Aching or burning pain may radiate from your wrist up through your arm or down into your fingers.
  • Swelling: Some people experience swelling in their fingers with carpal tunnel syndrome, especially after using their hands for a while.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is particularly associated with office work and factory jobs, but it also affects construction workers, first responders, mechanics, lawn service workers and more.
